THE HALF CAFF ONE
Combining the Colombian coffee from our Chocolatey one, with the same but caffeinated version from the same producer seemed like a great idea to offer a low caffeine fix for those who want a light buzz. It's a 50/50 split! It's like your favourite honeycomb inspired chocolate bar that we can't mention because we might get sued.

THE COFFEE STORY
To create our half caff, we have blended a caffeinated version with a decaffeinated version of the same coffee, grown by the same producer, which helps us to get that perfect flavour!
We sourced these beans from Popayan, in the department of Cauca, which benefits from rich volcanic soil, the perfect altitude and lots of rainfall - a coffee growing paradise.
In this region, 65 growers come together to create this fantastic coffee. The smallholders here prioritise the quality of the bean at every step of the process, which earns them premiums way beyond market price.
The decaffeinated part of this coffee has undergone the Sugarcane decaffeination process, where green coffee is decaffeinated using the by-product of sugarcane.
The caffeinated part of this coffee has gone through the regular ‘washed’ process, which involves removing the outer skin and then fermenting the beans in water to remove their pulp. They are then washed, dried, milled and sorted to assess quality. This method gives us a clean and bright end cup, making sure that we get all of those classic chocolatey flavours that Colombia is known for.
Nerdy Coffee Details
SCA CUP SCORE = 83 & 84 POINTS
An SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) cup score is essentially a score of coffee bean quality. Anything above 80 points would be considered a ‘speciality’ coffee. We choose to only source speciality grade coffee, which means that we can guarantee not only an amazing tasting coffee, but also that the coffee was farmed in the most ethical way.
DECAF PROCESS = SUGARCANE
This coffee is naturally decaffeinated at source using the by-product of fermenting sugarcane. In Colombia, where plenty of sugarcane is grown, it makes sense to use this naturally occurring by-product to complement their thriving coffee industry.
ALTITUDE = 1500 - 2070 MASL
We measure the altitude that coffee is grown at in ‘MASL’ (metres above sea level). The height that coffee is grown at can have a big impact on the taste of the coffee when roasted. Essentially, coffee beans grown at higher altitudes tend to be of higher quality and give us more unique flavours when roasted.
COFFEE VARIETAL = COLOMBIA, CASTILLO & CATURRA
A coffee varietal is the name given to the type of coffee plant - similar to the grape variety used in wine. The different varietals of the coffee plant thrive in particular conditions, and can shape the flavour and body of the coffee when roasted. Sometimes coffee lots can be made up of only one variety, and other times there are a mixture of varieties used.
