JARIO ARCILLA, COLOMBIA

THE COFFEE STORY

This stand out coffee is one of the highest quality of decafs that you will find, and it tastes like a flavour bomb! With an unbelievable cup score of 87, each coffee cherry was carefully hand-picked at the perfect ripeness before being sorted to remove any defects.

We term this coffee a microlot - which are small and exclusive lots of coffee that have been singled out due to their outstanding quality and fun, unique flavours.

Jario Arcilla, who produced this coffee, is a third-generation coffee grower from Quindio, Colombia. His family all work within coffee and between them they have produced some of the highest quality of speciality coffee out there.

The decaffeination process used for this special lot is natural sugarcane where the caffeine is extracted from the bean using a by-product of sugar cane and water, which enhances sweetness while keeping all of those amazing flavours in the bean.

Nerdy Coffee Details

SCA CUP SCORE = 87 POINTS

An SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) cup score is essentially a score of coffee bean quality. Anything above 80 points would be considered a ‘speciality’ coffee. We choose to only source speciality grade coffee, which means that we can guarantee not only an amazing tasting coffee, but also that the coffee was farmed in the most ethical way.

DECAF PROCESS = SUGARCANE

This coffee is naturally decaffeinated at source using the by-product of fermenting sugarcane. In Colombia, where plenty of sugarcane is grown, it makes sense to use this naturally occurring by-product to complement their thriving coffee industry.

ALTITUDE = 1200-1700 MASL

We measure the altitude that coffee is grown at in ‘MASL’ (metres above sea level). The height that coffee is grown at can have a big impact on the taste of the coffee when roasted. Essentially, coffee beans grown at higher altitudes tend to be of higher quality and give us more unique flavours when roasted.

COFFEE VARIETAL = CASTILLO

A coffee varietal is the name given to the type of coffee plant - similar to the grape variety used in wine. The different varietals of the coffee plant thrive in particular conditions, and can shape the flavour and body of the coffee when roasted. Sometimes coffee lots can be made up of only one variety, and other times there are a mixture of varieties used.
